Day 6- The Grand Canyon

Day 6: The Grand Canyon

Good morning America! Today we woke up bright and early at 4:45AM to hike the Grand Canyon! We were told MANY times to drink lots of water and be sure to stay hydrated.

After a night of stargazing, the campsite was full of tired and excited teenagers as we got ready for the hike of our lives. We started our morning with a protein packed breakfast that included peanut butter bagels and bananas. We left camp and walked about a mile and a half in the freezing cold towards the canyon. It should be noted that freezing weather at the canyon is unheard of this time of year. Once we finally arrived to the breathtaking sunrise, we split into groups based on how far we wanted to hike. The groups included a six-mile round trip, a three-mile round trip, and a one-mile round trip hike. Then the unforgettable journey began as we took our first steps into the canyon.

The weather was cool and was perfect for the hike, making it easy to walk down the canyon with ease and take lots of photos. Parents we know you can’t wait to see our postcard perfect pictures. We got back to the top mid-morning to do our own laundry (we know you’re proud as for some it was our first time). Don’t worry; we may or may not have some gifts for you when we arrive home. Some of us were also very fortunate to have the chance to call home yesterday for the first time, although the service was really slow. It was so special to hear all our loved one’s voices for the first time in six days, many tears were shed!!

For lunch we were served the TWB famous stew, made by our very own Vicky, Grant, Heather and Tim. YUM! For dinner we were able to buy our own meal, which was a very special treat compared to the burnt mac and cheese we had the other night. The remainder of the night included a fun sing along, full of off tune attempts to mastering songs like Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus and Cruise by Florida Georgia Line, and of course "Today" by John Denver. After bonding through singing, we were rewarded a long sleeve t-shirt to prove we hiked the Grand Canyon (for those of you who don’t believe us.) Then we all snuggled up for another night under the shooting stars, reminiscing on the beautiful day that we had just witnessed. Thus, concluding the most the rewarding day so far and ending the Dopey’s blog turn. Thanks for keeping up and watch out for the next one about Las Vegas, which will be posted Monday night as we complete our over night drive tonight from Vegas to Santa Monica. We can't wait to spend a day at the beach!! Hello to everyone back home :)

Thank you for your patience with the blog as we had no service in the Grand Canyon. We just got to Vegas and wanted to get the blog up, we will add captions later!!  The kids are so awesome and I am proud to be their counselor, I know I can say the same about the other counselors and how impressed we are with your kids. See you in a few weeks, I hope you are enjoying the blog! :)
